The TRUST Project’s university partners in Vietnam – VNU University of Economics and Business, Hue University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City Open University – co-organized a fintech national event themed “Fintech and Career Prospects”. VNU University of Economics and Business hosted the event held on August 11, 2022. The event focused on the fintech master’s program developed by the TRUST Project as well as career prospects in the fintech industry.
While the discussion affirmed the rapid growth of the fintech industry over the past decade, the shortage of skilled personnel to sustain this growth also surfaced. In Vietnam, only the three TRUST Projects are preparing to offer fintech graduate programs.
Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu, Vice-Rector of the University of Economics, said that fintech training will significantly contribute toward Vietnam’s goal of becoming a modern industrialized country by 2045.
Prof. Pham Xuan Hung, Head of the Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation, University of Economics, Hue University, announced the Fintech program was submitted to education authorities for approval in December 2021, with enrollment scheduled to start before year-end (2022). Dr. Hung emphasized the significance of cooperation and linkage among the three TRUST university partners, saying that, “Training capacity in financial technology in Vietnam is still limited, with only 3 units training this program. When cooperating, the University of Economics, VNU, University of Economics, Hue University, and the university. Ho Chi Minh City Open University can easily share teaching staff or share training programs.
Ms. Ilaria Reggiani, from the Guglielmo Marconi University and Project Manager of the TRUST Project, gave an overview of the TRUST Project while Dr. Dane Lukic from Glasgow Caledonian University walked the participants through the development of competences of fintech professionals (students, teachers, and leaders).
Mr. Tran Thien Phuong, Director of Digital Business and Project Director of MB Smartbank, Military Bank, discussed the skills and proficiency requirements to participate in the fintech field. Fintech personnel must both have an open mindset and be agile in handling information technology-related issues. “Therefore, the introduction of the Financial Technology program by Vietnamese universities has great significance for the development of the industry,” said Mr. Phuong.
